Back to the Gratzer/Panozzo issue. these were 2 guys I could not watch live, horrible technique especially John........ALL arms, no wrist, was like looking at early caveman. Alan had a similar approach that I just recently watched again on VH1 classic.
As to sound of the 70's/80's, yes quite a few guys were indeed doing this, but in fairness, it falls on the engineer, Alans drums sounded much deader then say Jeff's or Gadds. MO

Omar Hakim (I don't think he's recognised that well in relation to the other legends, e.g. Weckl, Gadd, Vinnie. I do think that he could well be the best that I've ever heard. He's natural, groovy, fluent and has chops. He is a legend and a master at his art)

He used to frequent the site sometime ago I believe. I got the site link from Steve. He used to have an English version but not since he's updated; hopefully he'll come by again as he's a killer player.
I actually don't hear that much of a Vinnie influence in him. You can SEE it, but I don't hear it oddly enough.

I give a vote for Mick Fleetwood, who sounds like Porcaro on the Bob Welch French Kiss disc. I thought it was Porcaro because there was definitely a Porcaro feel to it.
His fills and tasteful beats are pretty cool.
